Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes EKOPEL 2K Classic, Optimum, and Gold?

All EKOPEL 2K materials were specifically developed for resurfacing old bathtubs. They offer excellent adhesion, almost odourless application, and high impact resistance.

The main differences lie in the curing time and the additional UV protection.

EKOPEL 2K Classic is applied using the pouring method and cures within 48 hours. This option is the most cost-effective solution for bathtub resurfacing.

EKOPEL 2K Optimum is also applied by pouring but cures within just 24 hours, allowing the bathtub to be used again more quickly.

EKOPEL 2K Gold also cures within 24 hours and provides enhanced protection against sunlight. If your bathroom has a window or the bathtub is regularly exposed to sunlight, we recommend EKOPEL 2K Gold.

If the bathtub is not exposed to direct sunlight, EKOPEL 2K Classic or EKOPEL 2K Optimum can be used without any issues.

What is the difference between EKOPEL 2K and EKOPEL Roll-On?

EKOPEL 2K is applied using a pouring technique. The material is poured onto the edges and walls of the bathtub, flows evenly downwards, and spreads across the base. This creates an extra thick, smooth, and glossy coating.
We recommend EKOPEL 2K if you can remove the drain fittings or at least the drain cover. This allows excess material to drain away cleanly and ensures an even application of the coating.

EKOPEL Roll-On is applied with a roller, usually in two coats. This product is ideal when the drain cannot be dismantled or when a simpler application with a roller is preferred.
EKOPEL Roll-On is also an excellent solution for surfaces where the pouring method is not suitable.

At what room temperature can EKOPEL coatings be used?

The ideal room temperature for application is 21–23 °C. Before resurfacing, the bathroom should be brought to this temperature at least 24 hours in advance and maintained for 1–2 days afterwards to ensure the material spreads evenly and cures properly. The materials must be stored for at least 2 days prior to use in a warm, dry place. This ensures the correct viscosity and optimal application.

How to care for your bathtub after resurfacing?

To keep the new coating looking its best for a long time, please follow these guidelines:

  • Use mild, non-abrasive cleaning agents suitable for bathtubs.
  • If the cleaning agent is coloured, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area before cleaning the entire bathtub.
After application, immediately work the cleaning agent into a foam with a soft sponge and spread it evenly.
  • Rinse the bathtub thoroughly with water afterwards to completely remove all cleaning agent residues.

What should be avoided?

  • Do not dye your hair in the bathtub. The aggressive alkalis in hair dyes can damage the coating.
  • Avoid using coloured bath additives such as bath bombs or strongly staining bath salts, as these can attack or discolour the surface.
  • Do not use abrasive sponges, scouring agents, or aggressive cleaning products.
Does the old coating need to be removed?

If the bathtub has been previously coated and the old coating is peeling, we recommend removing these loose areas before applying EKOPEL.

It is not necessary to remove the entire old coating completely. Only remove the sections that are peeling or no longer firmly adhered.

Next, smooth any sharp edges and transitions by sanding to ensure an even application of the new EKOPEL coating.
